Happy New Year!

Hey all! Happy New Year! I hope 2010 brings everyone great things! :D

2009 was a good year, considering. It had its ups and downs but overall it was good! Finished Ringling, came to LA, got some work in film, got my facebook account hacked this morning..All fun stuff! ;) I just hope 2010 will be much better! :D

I thought I would post a work in progress of a little exercise I've been working on my free time. It is some dialogue from Kill Bill, and I am using Greg Peltz's KnockOut Model (Watch his film here!) Thanks a lot for letting me use her, Greg! It is still a work in progress, but I did promise some kind of update before the year was over! ;)

Alvin and The Chipmunks 2 is in theaters now! It is pretty darn cool seeing kids laugh at the movie and people clap at the end. :) All that hard work was worth it!

Well, Happy New Year! Go celebrate, be safe, and be with your loved ones! See you in 2010!

Wow, it has been a while! You six people following me must have been so worried! ;)

Hello!

I apologize for the lack of updates. Life after Ringling has been quite interesting! After graduation in May, I moved to Los Angeles and was picked up by Rhythm and Hues to work on Alvin & The Chipmunks 2. It was a very fun project and I can't wait for it to be on theaters! Be sure to see it! (hooray for shameless plugs!)

After that I went to Sony Pictures Imageworks to work on Cats & Dogs 2, which I finished working on this month. And now I am taking some time off to work on me reel and find my next new adventure/movie/job. And I can't wait... It's getting boring at home!

I'm close to finishing a new lil' animation exercise to keep me from getting rusty and I shall promptly post it, followed by a new demo reel, I hope!

So to all a Happy Holiday! :) I hope everyone has a great time and that 2010 will be a great year for animation, and life in

So, finally, I am a BFA!

More importantly, I finally got a weeks worth of good sleep! :)

Yes, I have graduated from Ringling College along with my wonderful classmates. It was a long an enjoyable four years and I am proud to have met so many awesome artists and just great and fun people to be around with. I will miss them terribly! :<

And now I join the many artists hunting for the ever elusive job-asaurus. I hope to find a good one that will offer shelter and food for me and my wifey. Also, good job-asaurus teeth can be used for spearheads and the like!

I did get something pretty neat for graduation! A Nikon D-60! Now I can take super cool pictures!

Other than that this is the end of my week off...and then it's back to animation! I have not posted it yet but I am doing a small lipsync test with Greg Peltz's awesome model, The Knockout. I shall post it soonish when I finish it!

Although it may have to wait... My mouse's left click is broken and it is a pain to work with it. Thankfully logitech is sending me a new one.

And that was it! A long needed update with no art at all! So I better get workin'! And to all my classmates: keep on rockin'!

2D Water!

For my short I required water effects... I decided to draw the water traditionally and then color and comp it onto my shot using Photoshop and Shake. It's been a learning experience and I owe a lot of it to Mr Gary Schumer, who has been my 2D Water FX mentor here at Ringling! Here is the cleaned up animation, all on 1's.

It was really fun to make it... And I learned a lot thanks to Gary. It felt great to get on the good old animation desk and flip some pages once more...

Hello ladies and gentlemen!

I apologize for the long silence. I am sure the 2 people who read my blog have forgotten about it already...but I thought I'd post a smallish update today.

I've been busy with my senior thesis, and have been working hard animating this crazy crazy story of a cat and her owner ( http://meowthesis.blogspot.com/ under construction ). While I can't share story details, I can finally show the final models with textures, and a small animation test for each of my characters, which sadly I could only spend 2 days doing... (Animating the kitty was fun! She's like a Pokemon there...)

A long due update!

Well, it HAS been a while since I posted anything here..so it is time for a little update since I need a break from modeling my thesis kitty cat!

Wow..haven't posted since April... Well, I managed to survive Prepro at Ringling and came out with a kinda cute idea for my thesis. It involves a cat, a hat, and the cat's owner who everyone says looks like me (with a goatee). I shall post some progress soon, as well as start a blog for my short film. :) I promise! It is already made actually, I just need to organize it..and then I will post a link to it!

The summer has been a good one. The first half I spent at home with Carrie and had some time to relax and be lazy, and draw! I redesigned my characters for thesis and rework some of the visual style I am going for, and I really need to thank my teachers Tammy, Ron, and Keith for that! I also found an amazing composer to help me with the score of my film, Brian Weitzeil, whom I have to bug about making a blog or something so I can link him! In the meantime..sneak peek of rough turnarounds!

In June I was lucky enough to get an animation internship at Sony Pictures Imageworks, too! I spent two months here and it's been a blast. I really liked LA (at least, the little I got to visit!), and the studio is a great place, and they are making great stuff there. I met a great deal of very VERY talented people who kick my butt, which is awesome. :D It was exciting to be part of it for this short period of time! I also got to visit Disney Animation Studios and Dreamworks, which are both just as amazing, and are making awesome stuff! I am really looking forward to all the movies that are coming next. I know you wanna hear more but... Lord Sauron has many spies, with many eyes! ;) In any case, they're /awesomeeeeeee/!!!! It's really great to see how many cool animated movies are coming our way, and I really hope to work as an animator in this industry when I grow up. Makes me really wanna start cracking on my thesis. In the meantime, keep an eye out for Sony Imageworks/Animation's next animated movie. I'm not sure if I can say what it is... but it looks /sweet/. And yummy. Very very yummy. Delicious even.

(me the day before I started at SPI, being an excited dork... "I'm ready to Imagework, ahyuck!") :D

I also found the amazing Flight of the Conchords. As Kristin put it... Pure gold!

Also, I got to go to Comicon and Siggraph! Both were amazing with many talented artists and just darn cool things to see! Business cards were traded, books were bought, awesome people were met, laughs were had. It was a good time. This whole summer has been inspiring and very very humbling, which is a good thing. There's a long road to go and a lot to learn! (how cheesy am I?)

And I guess that was it in a nutshell! Tomorrow is my last day at Imageworks, and while it is really sad to leave and turn in my ID card, I am looking forward to working on my short and more importantly, seeing my wife again after two months and taking her to see Colombia for the first time and visit my family for a week!

And eat mom's cooking.

Maquette Progress

So I got bored and decided to post my progress on my maquette's head! Yay.

Here's a simple armature done with a steel rod, soft bendable wires, and epoxy putty. The smelly kind.

Next, give it a nice coat of foil!

And then, a base layer of sculpey... I did a mix of super sculpey (with the skin translucent color) and white and black Sculpey III. (Thanks to Greg Peltz for the tips!)

And a couple hours later, more progress...

Yay for sculpey fun! My previous 2 attempts have royaly sucked... but I think this one will be..not TOO bad. Tomorrow I have to go buy some 90% alcohol to start smoothing shapes out and some toothpicks so I can attach the ears....

Lets see how I manage to ruin it! :D

Final Color DFA Assignment

Here's my final color piece for my DFA class at Ringling!
I've still got work to do on it but like my other projects, it'll have to wait until Thanksgiving break.

It was definitely fun! Never really done a color piece digitally. And Painter X is awesome! I was going for a watercolor-y look to it. Gonna try something more complicated for my next piece.

DFA is definitely a relaxing, therapeutic class.

Aaaah, trying so hard to get some solid portfolio pieces together. I don't feel I'm at the level I'd like to be...and Junior year is going by so fast!

Well..on the bright side, I'm sure every studio needs a coffee boy around..and hey! I'm from Colombia! ;)

But seriously. I need to work faster and better. Gotta get me an internship next summer...

I wanted to post some neat stuff I found in a cozy little toy museum in London, when I went there with Carrie last summer...

So these are pretty neat. They were selling some of these (not the actualy toys, but vintage..remakes I suppose). They were expensive, so sadly I couldn't afford any of them..but.. Aren't they awesome?

This was my favorite part though...

I was very excited to see a magic lantern, a little Felix the Cat flipbook, and an actual praxinoscope!

They were selling new ones but...sigh. :<

We also went around and saw the sights (Woot Stone henge!), but this was definetly some of the most fun we had in London.

Darnit. I keep forgetting I have a blog.. I read so many animation blogs and I neglect mine so much... ;<

School started a couple weeks ago and I feel great! I'm stoked about our projects, classes, and teachers, and although I cannot post on what the projects are, they are fun! Even modeling my new character is fun... (Mind you, I HATE modeling) It feels great being back producing stuff again, but sadly, after one week of clicking, my wrist is starting to hurt again. I think I'll have to buy some weird mouse now or something, or keep modeling with a wacom.

Which hurts too...

But Hey!

As soon as I have some yummy animations up, I shall post them. Also started working on an online portfolio/website and should be up soon, but I must come up with a catchy name for it.

Weekly Sketches, and Happy Birthday Ollie!

Ah, haloween is here. :> But more importantly..happy birthday Ollie! He's a living legend. :>:>:>

I..TRIED to do a caricature of him but I suck at caricatures..so..I'll work on that and post it later. In the meantime.. I got an Intuos! And because I bought myself this nifty little gadget, I promised I'd do at least one sketch per week with it, and hopefully they'll become daily sketches soon. I just got it yesterday..so for this week I used a pencil, which is just as good.

I suddenly had an urge to write about myself, or at least about what brought me to Ringling. I've been listening to The Animation Podcast quite a bit during classes as I draw, and every episode has been like a jolt of energy, making me want this more and more. And so, I decided to think about why I had come here.

I am Colombian and was lucky enough o grow up in a third world country. No, I mean it! This meant that our TV stations didn't get cartoons when they came out. Nope, the first cartoons I saw weren't the great Disney ones from the 80's and 90's (These were for my teenage years when we got Cable). I grew up with the good old stuff... Bugs Bunny, Daffy, Tom and Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, and even Merry Melodies and Silly Symphonies. I ate this stuff up! It was ALL I saw, and most of the channels I got aired this in the mornings and right as I got home until 7pm. I became obsessed with Bugs, drew him, pretended to be him when we were playing hide and seek at school, and even ate carrots and began taking piano lessons. He was my childhood hero (even though he cross dresses ;).

So I became an animation nut and I didn't even know it. My teen years came by and I didn’t really go into rock music or buying CDs and watching MTV. We got cable, and I watched Cartoon Network and The Disney Channel. I adored Gummy Bears, Tale Spin, Chip'n Dale R/R, and Darkwing Duck. Oh, and Duck Tales (Whoo hoo)! This was all on original English tracks too, which led me to investigate where these all came from. USA (for the most part!). Aaaah, paradise. How I loved going to Disney World and buying cheap VHS tapes at 7/11s. Good old Daffy and Bugs cartoons in their original language. I still have about 3 boxes full of tapes I got when I was a kid.

Animation thrilled me. I never considered it as a profession until my late teens though, and even then it was my..10th choice? It wasn’t until after Toy Story that I began wondering... Do I REALLY want to be a Math guy and go into Physics? Engineering? I DID draw on my spare time, so why not Graphic Design? Hrm.

Took me a while to remember how Ariel and Sebastian captured me when I was a kid (Little Mermaid was the first movie I EVER saw in a movie theater. Blew me away. I even had my parents buy me a fish tank after the movie), and how when I was 7 I watched Bambi over. And over. And over again. I still have that old tape where I recorded Bambi..Covered in blank stickers with horrible drawings of the characters.

Then senior year hit me like a brick. Dude! I can ANIMATE OMG WTF YA RLY!

I'm Colombian. Not many people know it, but animation isn't big there. ;) By this I mean the little animation there is, is reserved for commercials and a couple of shorts here and there. This is fine and all, but people don’t consider it an art form there. 90% of "animators" there are "3D artist", and 70% of those are engineers who know how to use Maya and think that's all there is to it. So I went to a design school, then ended up in Canada where I went to an affiliated technical school.

3 years of learning how to use software. Waste of time? Probably, but I finally figured out that this was art, not learning how to click a mouse and render ugly scenes. I freaked out! I spent so much time being a computer geek that I never improved my art, and since our high schools back home didn't offer good art classes (they gave us a bunch of oil paints and a canvas and told us to paint..That was ALL), I already sucked. Not only that, but the evil that is Anime hooked me into drawing bad, bad fan anime. I have some stuff to remind me how I should never try to do that again.

So I went back home to Colombia for about 8 months and worked on a portfolio for Ringling. Why Ringling? Everyone recommended it. Now I realize Sheridan or CalArts would have been good choices too. But it didn't matter, I just wanted to go to art school. It was 4 months or trying out stuff and teaching myself how to draw, and 4 months of insane portfolio work. I honestly didn't think I would get in, though. A guy who's never had an art class in his life? Pft! Sometimes I wonder if I got in because I'm a minority.. ;)

ConceptArt.org's forums were great help, and I should return there someday and give back to that community. Awesome artists and great inspiration.

So now I'm in art school, majoring in animation.. Focused on 3D animation. I've learnt so much about traditional animation here though, that sometimes I want to go to CalArts. The pencil gives so much freedom.. I suck at traditional, but I like it. :D But then I realize that an animator should be able to use many mediums to express themselves, so my goal is to make great 3D using traditional principles..And who knows..Maybe become a full fledged traditional animator one day. One can only dream. :>

And if I succeed or if I fail... I owe it all to that wascawy wabbit. Heheheheheheh.

October 15th. Things happened today...sad endings..and new beginnings! And as such, I have started a blog. But it won't be to rant about life (too much) like LiveJournals are.. This will be solely to post some of the work I've been doing at Ringling School of Art and Design.
